Start the new year with a hike at a Louisiana State Park
Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser and Louisiana State Parks invites you to start 2026 by getting out and exploring your local state park or historic site in conjunction with America’s State Parks’ First Day Hikes. This program, now running for over 30 years, encourages people to begin the new year with a hike to connect with the outdoors. All First Day Hike participants will enjoy free admission.
“I encourage everyone to kick off the new year by stepping outside and exploring one of Louisiana’s incredible state parks or historic sites,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser. “First Day Hikes are a great way to get moving, enjoy our beautiful landscapes, and experience the unique history and culture found across our park system.”
Folks looking for a challenge will love the ranger-guided hike at Poverty Point World Heritage Site where participants will hike to the top of Mound A, explore the earth works and nature found in the park. A ranger at Grand Isle State Park will lead a relaxing beach stroll and Fontainebleau State Park will host a walking history tour on the sugar mill structure that remains on park grounds.
