Celebrate Kids to Parks Day at Poverty Point World Heritage Site
Poverty Point World Heritage Site is celebrating national Kids to Parks Day on Saturday, May 17, 2025. Visitors, especially younger ones, are invited to join in the fun. Bring a picnic lunch and plan to stay and enjoy a full day of activities.
Sit back and learn about the earthworks and the individuals who built them on a ranger-guided tram tour of the site. Learn how to use an Atlatl, a tool used by the native people of Poverty Point to launch spears or darts for hunting. Get your hands dirty water-screening excavated soil while learning about archaeology from the Poverty Point Station archaeologists. For the full program schedule, visit the Louisiana State Parks website.
“National Kids to Parks Day is not just about getting children and adults outdoors to play, even though outdoor activity is a major part of the event’s foundation,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser. “This is a day to learn about our natural resources, our state’s history, and about all those things that make Louisiana a wonderful place to live. Our state parks and historic sites do a wonderful job of preserving our natural and cultural heritage, for the generations of tomorrow.”
Young visitors can also become a Louisiana Office of State Parks Junior Ranger, a program designed for children seven years and older who are interested in learning more about the outdoors and activities available at Louisiana’s State Parks and Historic Sites.
All outdoor events are weather permitting.
The $4 admission fee provides access to the museum, film theatre, hiking trail, driving trail, tram tour and interpretive events. Children three and under and seniors 62 and over are admitted free of charge.
Poverty Point World Heritage Site is located at 6859 LA Highway 577 in Pioneer, LA. The park is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.
