WET PLATE PHOTOGRAPHY
Shaun Stewart of The Black Hand Alchemy Company specializes in one-of-a-kind wet plate tintype portraits and landscapes using the same unforgiving chemistry from 1851. Tintypes are an antique handmade art form using equipment and techniques more than a century old.
There are no shortcuts. No digital nonsense. Just silver, collodion, tin, and a stubborn belief that dangerous chemicals just hit different.
Through this process of using recipes for handmade chemistry predating the Civil War, and a 123-year-old camera, he captures timeless images that reveal the depth, character, and beauty of his subjects and surroundings. It's slow. It's unpredictable. It's deeply human and incredibly rewarding.
Join us at Mansfield State Historic Site October 17, 2016 from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. to learn about this incredible art form and have the chance to have your portrait created by Shaun!
