Wartime Mapping
This hands-on presentation will look at the intricacies of designing maps during the Civil War. Examples will be given of period maps and examples of the process, revealing the subject of mapping as both a science and an art. Other tools of the trade, such as compasses, will be available and on display to examine and be discussed, comparing these instruments with the objects we use today for mapping, such as GPS and the development of the modern geographic information systems. For those who wish, especially the kids, there will be an opportunity for visitors to design their own maps, with paper and pencils provided by the site. This will be both a fun and educational presentation on a unique topic that we still use today!
