Earth Oven Demonstration

Poverty Point World Heritage Site will host a pre-historic cooking demonstration, featuring the earth oven method of cooking on Saturday, October 23, at 11 a.m. The program offers a unique look at prehistoric cooking with an earth oven. A ranger will show how Native Americans who built Poverty Point used shaped lumps of fired earth called Poverty Point Objects to cook their food 3,500 years ago. Face mask and social distancing are recommended for the program. We welcome visitors to come and learn about this ancient, native way of cooking food.
