July 9, 1863: Confederate Garrison at Port Hudson Surrenders! Join a ranger in this unique history hike as he discusses July 9, 1863: Confederate Garrison at Port Hudson Surrenders! Guests meet at the visitor center and have an introduction to the events leading up to the Confederate surrender and then motor caravan to the area of Old Port Hudson near the surrender site and hike to the African-American Native Guard Battlefield examining the events of the May 27th, 1863 battle. It will be hot so dress appropriately and bring plenty of fluids. Closed toe shoes are required. The hike will be a 3.0 mile round-trip. For further information call 225-654-3775.
