Public Lands Day Hike

On Saturday, September 24, visitors to Poverty Point World Heritage Site are invited to take part in a ranger-led hike to celebrate Public Lands Day. National Public Lands Day is traditionally the nation's largest single-day volunteer effort. It celebrates the connection between people and green space in their community, inspires environmental stewardship, and encourages use of open space for education, recreation and health benefits. The ranger-led the hike will showcase the mounds, earthworks and nature at this ancient site. Visitors are encouraged to bring gloves to help in picking up any litter along the trail. This program begins at 10 a.m. with an introductory video in the museum followed by the roughly 2 hour long hike. Be aware that this event is weather permitting.

Poverty Point World Heritage Site offers visitors the unique opportunity to experience and learn about the earthworks and those individuals who raised them from the ground between the years of 1700 and 1100 BCE. The $4 admission fee provides access to the museum, film theatre, hiking trail, driving tour, seasonal tram tour, and interpretive events. Children (3 and under) and senior citizens (62 and over) are admitted free of charge.
