Preserving the Harvest

November 18, 2023 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Guests are invited to Fort Jesup to learn different techniques for preserving the fall harvest.  A historic interpreter will discuss different ways food stuffs would be preserved throughout the year.  The discussion will include preserving fruits such as apples, and the techniques used for putting them up for the winter, including apple sauce, apple cider, canning apples, and the use of a root cellar.  There will also be a discussion of the modern equivalent of some of these techniques.  There will be discussions on making homemade extracts, preserving root vegetables, and smoking meats as well. Join us and learn how our ancestors preserved foods to enjoy for the winter months.
