ONGOING PUBLIC ARCHAEOLOGY

May 21, 2025 10:00 am - 3:30 pm

Beginning on Wednesday May 21st Poverty Point World Heritage Site invites you check out excavation and ongoing archaeology. Archaeologist T.R. Kidder, Ph.D. and his team from Washington University in St. Louis are currently working to re-excavate portions of the earthworks on site to gain new insights into the indigenous peoples who created the largest earthen monuments for their time and place in North America. The team will be conducting public archaeology on site until June 15th.

Visitors are welcome to join our scheduled ranger-guided tram tours (offered Wed-Sun at 10:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM) to get connected to the site and visit some of the ongoing excavations. There will also be some availability to view excavations during self-guided driving or hiking tours when archaeologists are available.

Keep in mind that public archaeology along with ranger-guided tours are weather permitting, so be mindful of weather conditions during your visit. Scheduled tours are also altered to accommodate scheduled field trips.
