Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of Thursday, June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.
On this day, Longfellow-Evangeline's interpretive staff is proud to offer guided tours of the Olivier Plantation Home, with a focus expressly on the enslavement on Creole Sugar plantations, the daily lives of enslaved peoples, and emancipation in Louisiana.
