BLACK POWDER DEMONSTRATION
Show All Dates
Join Interpretive Rangers Philip or Austin on the grounds of Longfellow Evangeline SHS to learn about one of the weapons commonly used during the 1800s. A philosopher named Roger Bacon recorded the first known Western recipe for black powder in 1242, consisting of charcoal, sulfur, and potassium nitrate. Traditional black powder rifles have never entirely disappeared, partly due to an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality.
While advances in materials and manufacturing techniques, the heart of a rifle’s design hasn’t changed much in at least a couple of hundred years. The invention of the black powder rifle, going by its most basic definition, dates back almost 1,000 years. Park operations: Daily from 9:00am to 5:00pm. This program is a monthly demonstration. Be prepared for a loud bang.
